In his experience, Richard has learnt that students coming for tutoring are usually very bright students, some exceptionally so. They are struggling because they want to know “the why” and “the how.” They are not satisfied with just accepting the way things have been explained to them; they want to know more than what was explained to them in class about the concept or method that has not been explained to them by whoever is teaching them, or they missed grasping it well because they are being slowed down by fellow students. He addresses these gaps at a personal level to make the students get on top of the concepts. Thereby getting the confidence to study and excel.
More to the point, the teacher might not have properly explained to the student what is going on. So they miss the concept because they are smart and it has not been explained to them; they’re trying to gain understanding but they can’t. Richard ensures that he addresses such gaps by properly explaining it to the student.
Some students are plain bored at school as they are very smart; their classmates slow them down, so they lose track because their mind wonders. They need one-on-one tutoring to achieve their full potential.
Some students are sent to him; apparently they have “learning difficulties,” but in reality there is nothing wrong with them. Richard says they’re just really smart. He has to slow them down, and once they get concept and method, they see the sum and can give you the answer, omitting the steps and working out and thereby losing the marks. Telescoping, as he calls it. He has to drill them to do the steps and get the marks.
In certain cases, Richard often has to “go back to basics and then work forward.” More like “go back three or four steps, then work forward.” This process has proved very successful as it effectively invigorates the student’s mind, leading to improved confidence in the subject’s areas where they were weak.
Parent Initiates Contact
The parent has seen an advertisement on a local WhatsApp group or has been referred by a parent whose child is already being tutored, or the tutor has recently been contacted by a child psychologist he's networking with, some specializing in learning difficulties, others in regular psychology issues.
Requirements Analysis
The tutor has a conversation with the parent to discuss the needs of the student.
An assessment booking must be made.
Before going any further, the parent or legal guardian MUST complete the prescribed Tuition Agreement Form for the student.
There are TWO forms: for under 21 and over 21 of age.
A booking is made and an invoice sent to the parent.
Payment via EFT is expected and must be made before the next phase takes place.
Student & Tutor Engagement
Once everything in Phase II is completed and verified, an assessment of the student is done to find out where the issues are. This entails the Tutor having a one-on-one session with the student
Feedback is given to the parent and a tutoring plan is discussed to ensure the student receives maximum results from the tutoring.
Admission For Tutorials
Tutorial sessions are typically One or Two hours no more.
Students are usually given home work to do.
The Tutor will continuously give parents feedback as the student progresses. The Tutor also does the same in the cases where there is a child psychologist involved so they know what is going on.
Passing Well is Achievable.
